The Old Town and its square, which is completely closed to traffic, are the lifeblood at the heart of Prague. Walk there from the Powder Gate via Staromestske Namesti Square and Celetna and Ovocny Streets, fully pedestrianised zones which have lost none of their magic despite the summer crowds taking coffee at the pavement cafes.
The North side of Old Town Square is dominated by the dazzling white façade of St. Nicholas Church, often used for concerts. Overlooking the square there are two superb examples of Gothic architecture, the building known as The House of the Stone Bell and the Rococo Kinsky Palace.
The East side of the square is dominated by the Church of Our Lady before Tyn, reached through the courtyard of the former Tyn parish school, and by its two 80 metre high towers; opposite stands one of the most stunning buildings in the whole of Prague: the Old Town Hall (Staromestska Radnice) and the Astronomical Clock, one of the city’s biggest tourist attractions, with its amazing mechanical procession that takes place every hour on the hour, from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
